Holiday Nightmare for Granddaughter

My granddaughter, Sarah-Sophia, now lives in Mauritius with her husband Biljan, a barrister. They met during Sarah-Sophia's uni years at Cambridge and after their wedding in Manchester a year or so ago they left to live in Biljan's birthplace, the island of Mauritius.

They recently had a short holiday in Colombia but the homecoming was a real "Tales of the Unexpected". Here is her account of what went on.

Moral: Holidays can damage your sanity!

Hence the why of not getting on an airplane well explained. Until Canada builds a wall to keep us out, I shall therefore count that as my only international destination. Your daughter's video was only disturbing to me, the non-existent traveler, because as oi write this my son is en-route from Beijing.

I stay home, so I’m not even as adventurous as Walking Man, although it's just not that far to Canada from western Oregon.

I was so glad to see that you had posted again, but when I saw that it was about family, I thought that maybe something tragic had happened, so Sarah-Sophia’s trouble was actually a relief to me in comparison to my fears.

By the Small Gods pointless red tape, nonesensical nay causes so much trouble for what should be perfectly normal journeys! The poor pair, I'm glad they met that chap who could help in the end. She's a lovely girl eh? Good at videoing, and safely at home by now too I hope. X

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments. Sarah-Sophia has certainly blossomed and, unlike her Gramps (me), has been clocking up many miles around the globe. I was unable to attend her wedding in Manchester and also her Mauritian wedding celebrations a day or two later. There were many more guests at the Mauritius gathering as is the custom there. I'm so glad that she and Bilshan got back to their home safely; their journey has confirmed my take on travel, or rather NOT to travel.

One of my bucket-list items is, however, to zoom around the skies of Lincolnshire in a flimsy little two-seater 'plane or even a microlight. Used to love going for a flip in a 'trainer' when I was serving in the RAF in Germany in the early 1950s. All for free and with a Battle of Britain pilot at the controls. Sheer bliss. Absolutely the closest to Heaven as I'll ever have been!

I prefer to be an armchair traveler. If it's not airport problems, it'll be food poisoning, jet lag, lost luggage, or any number of other stresses. I knew a woman and her husband who had their wedding rings stolen on their honeymoon. I'd rather go on day trips and sleep in my own bed.

I'm with you there, Sparkling. Far too much hassle pour moi.

My bucket list consists of trying to live as long as I can, providing I can start feeling good, and I will spend my days in my recliner enjoying the travel channel without having to travel. Due to all the horrors, terror, and even just the unending chaos that your daughter went through, my recliner is much safer. And I share my bathroom with no strangers. LOL

"I will spend my days in my recliner"

Maybe you could make it like a cockpit and have everything you might want or need within reach.
