My Scruffy Cottage Garden

This is a short stroll through my untidy little back garden and to the east gates of Mellerstain House.

Their gardens are much better kept than mine. But they have a couple of chaps to do theirs; I'm chief cook, bottle washer and grass cutter in my bit of Mellerstain.

Background music: Pavane (Fauré)

What a wonderful garden stroll. Thank you for taking me along. Your garden is wonderful, just what I think of as an "English" garden.

I enjoyed visiting your scruffy garden more than the larger ones with workers. Maybe because yours is tended with love and the others are cared for by someone being paid to do it. They are all very beautiful, but you know what I mean. When we care for our own, every little bud is so special. So sad about your Stella. We planted trees when our children were born at our old house. Hope to see some more of these videos Philip. Your voice is so soothing.

Scruffy!?! That's hardly scruffy. Thank you for showing this to us.

You are far too modest about your garden. It's beautiful!

Philip, your garden is quite charming! I think if cottage gardens are too manicured they lose a little something. Yours is just right. Thanks for the tour. :-)

Scruffy would be if there were tyres and garbage abandoned in the midst of the growth. What you have is nature grown up. Looks good to me and another good tour to boot.

Your garden isn't little at all, and I like the trees.

I can't wait to see the garden in the spring. How beautiful - exactly my idea of an "English Garden." And, believe me, you're not talking to yourself, but to an enchanted follower of your posts. Hope you'll keep them coming. :)

Oh Philip, you suave devil you. How jealous my friends will be when they learn that I was escorted on a walk, and have been shown the gates and gardens of a grand home. Not to mention a very lovely cottage garden that's really quite sizable! It's lovely.

Don't worry, one of the few good things about mobile/cell phones being everywhere? The jogger assumed you were talking on your earpiece sized mobile. Probably conducting trades in a foreign land.

What a lovely walk, Philip. Thank you for it. I think I'll tease my husband about this when he gets home.

"Today Philip took me on a lovely walk in the British country side. You never take me anywhere! Well, out for sushi. Or dinner, movies...vacations...and, oh all right, you take me anywhere I want to go, but you don't have an accent do you?"

What charming comments from you all. You are all too kind, you really are.

I've lived in this small village of Mellerstain longer than any other place since we were married. Moved around, went where the job took me so to speak.

I've no intention of moving away from here. The Borders, especially this part, suits me better than anywhere else I've ever been.

Thanks again.

That was a lovely breath of fresh air after a looong day! Your garden has real character and is not scruffy at all. You should see mine, mine IS scruffy (no old supermarket trolleys or burnt-out cars, but scruffy nonetheless). Thanks for that.

I too am an untidy gardener. I envy those artistic types who lay out string for the plants to follow, in neat lines, like maybe ancient Egyptians trying to figure out pi..
Pavane, huh?
I kind of like flamenco, which someties almost sounds like a pavone, but more physical, shoe-slamming.

Oh Phillip you do have a special touch with commentary. I felt as if I was walking there right next to you. I love your garden.
