Will You Donate Your Body to Medical Science?

My brother David is dying.  Cancer is the killer. He will not have a funeral when his life ends, which will be sooner rather than later.  He is in torment and death will be better for him than life.

He and his partner have already made arrangements for David's body to be donated to a London teaching hospital so that medical students can learn by using David in whatever way is required.

They can delve into his illness, his lungs, his brain (he also has dementia now) or anything that will enhance their knowledge of the human body.

I think this is a wonderful way of leaving this wicked world. It obviates the need for lining the pockets of funeral companies, and of meaningless church services and all the paraphernalia that dying involves.

It provides something USEFUL in life. It may provide valuable information about these diseases.  It is a way of giving something back as one pegs out, so to speak. I am all for it.

Well done David, and Margaret.  You are both suffering greatly at the moment but when it's all over you will know that out of the evil of cancer and dementia something GOOD will emerge because of this donation of David's body to science.

Amen to that, if you get my drift.

  1. I'm really sorry to hear that your brother is so ill Phil. It is a wonderful thing that he has decided to do. It must have been a hard decision for both of them, but yes, it definitely will benefit the rest of us. Well done David!

  2. Thank you Stella. Do hope all is well with you and Larry - he must have become more familiar with the 'roundabouts' when driving on the wrong side of the road in Uk.

  3. Philip, I am sure you've had plenty of "sorry's" to last you but...may he pass gently and easily into that soft night into the house of your ancestors.

YEAH for your brother and his woman! I have my own already arranged, my wife as well. My kids think it's because I am too cheap but they don't remember all the way back to their great grandfather Durfee cadavers have been donated. Though I broke from tradition and did not will mine to U of M.

  5. I'm so sorry, Philip.

My friend, Paul, the old man who killed himself, donated his body, making him the only person I've ever known to do it. I think of doing the same and wonder why the thought is so abhorrent to me.

  6. Hi Snowy, good to see you here.
When we're gone we're gone, to modify the message that retailers often urge us to buy.
To me the thought of cutting up a human body is abhorrent - but cutting up a cadaver for medical research and education is totally different, and OK to me.

  7. Wishing you strength and peace in this trying time. There are sadly no words that can truly comfort at a time such as this. You're in my prayers.

And of course, I'd donate my body to medical science. If there is anything to offer those who still have a chance, why deny that...

  9. If only more of us came to that decision -
he is both brave and generous.

I wanted to thank you for leaving such delightful comments on my blog, and to tell you I am glad we will be reading each other's posts again.

  12. David is on auto-pilot now, just asleep for 90% of each day with the help of strong medicine. The St. Christopher Nurses call daily to check his equipment and his partner Margaret is constantly there with him.

David is now losing weight and flesh. Much like my brother Geoff who died over five years ago of cancer.

An exhaustingly hard time for the caring partners relatives who await the inevitable.
